Salt water is similar to normal water, but it does more harm than good and is gathered from the sea. Drinking salt water will make you vomit, losing health and hydration. Salt water can be purified using a water purifier.

Crafting
Salt Water cannot be crafted — it drops as loot, comes from a research blueprint, or is found at monuments.
Recycling
Rust has two recycler types. Monument recyclers are faster and yield 60%, but you can be attacked. Safe-zone recyclers in Outpost and Bandit yield 40% and take longer, but turrets protect you.
Salt Water cannot be recycled.
