Charcoal
Charcoal is the byproduct of wood when used for smelting in a campfire or furnace. It is used in conjunction with sulfur to craft gunpowder, a key ingredient for ammunition and explosives. Though it may be tempting to throw charcoal away, large quantities will be required in later stages of the game. Keep it if you can.

Crafting
Charcoal cannot be crafted — it drops as loot, comes from a research blueprint, or is found at monuments.
Recycling
Rust has two recycler types. Monument recyclers are faster and yield 60%, but you can be attacked. Safe-zone recyclers in Outpost and Bandit yield 40% and take longer, but turrets protect you.
Charcoal cannot be recycled.
